With the recent support on openstreetmap.org for Maplibre-based maps, I thought it would be interesting to create a new version of our Transport map styles, to take full advantage of the client-side rendering.

It wasn’t as straightforward as I had hoped! In this presentation I’ll discuss what I learned along the way. I’ll dig into some of the features and limitations of Maplibre when converting from existing Mapnik styles, and suggest some changes to Maplibre to make future cartographic work easier. I’ll also go into the details of some features I added to Glug, the cartographer-friendly stylesheet language that I used for this project.
